Problem behaviors are staying the same or increasing

If the teacher knows that problem behaviors are staying the same or increasing, at least his data collection is working.  Although the actual collection of data may have some effect on student behavior, it is really the instructional program which will make the difference.  One note, don't "punish your students with pencil."  That is, don't glare at your misbehaving student as you scratch your negative behavioral observations onto a piece of paper.

Potential Remedy

Teachers should become familiar with the special education research literature to help them to find solutions for changing problem behaviors.  Whatever the attempted means for changing behaviors, data collection will be a critical part.
