The student does not attend to the cues Obviously students will not be able to perform if they do not know what cues they need to attend to. This problem is typical of students having difficulty with generalization of skills. Potential Remedy One of the best ways to assist students to attend to relevant cues is to highlight them in some way. If I want a student to push a particular button on a gray and silver machine, I can paint the button yellow. If I want students to pay attention to a particular word, I can print it bold. By initially accenting the relevant cues or stimuli you will help students attend to what is relevant. Later, the cues can be faded such that the student now performs under the natural stimuli. |
