The acronym ICE is an easy way to remember the needed transition services which must be included in a student's IEP beginning at age 16.

I= Instruction
C= Community experiences
E= Employment

The law also states that "when appropriate" the additional areas of daily living skills and functional vocational evaluation must be included.

Within these general areas, the teacher should ensure that the following issues are considered:

secondary education - graduation/proficiency standards, various in school therapies (occupational or physical therapy, speech and language, hearing, vision)
post-secondary education -including full time college, part time college, vocational training, adult education classes
employment - including competitive, supported, sheltered, volunteer alternatives
income/financial/economic issues/money management/Social Security
living arrangements - including living independently, with family, relatives or friends, in semi-independent setting, group home, residential care
military
medical issues/Medi-cal
insurance
personal management/grooming
domestic skills
recreation and access to recreation
residential issues
social adjustment/relationships/behavior/sexuality
transportation/travel
work training
linkage  to adult services
independence/community safety/personal choice
