The Employment Development Department

The Employment Development Department, aka EDD, aka the Unemployment Office, assists students by helping them find employment.  This office also administers the Job Training and Partnership Act (JTPA) which provides summer youth employment and in-school programs.

Eligibility Criteria - To be eligible for EDD, you must meet the following criteria:
California residents are eligible for EDD services
Youth ages 14-21, who are economically disadvantaged qualify for JTPA

EDD provides job placement  services, including job matching, job application and job search skills.  Additionally, special services are provided for individuals having difficulty finding work.

"JTPA provides 'Entry Employment Experience' training programs:

Work Experience - a short-term work assignment with a public employer or private nonprofit  agency.  Participants are paid at least minimum wage.
Try-out-employment - Youth are employed for less than 250 hours at private for-profit worksites or at public and nonprofit private worksites.
On-the-job Training (OJT) - Training in private or puglic sectors which occurs while trainee is engaged in productive wrok.  Employers are reimbursed up to 50% of trainee's starting hourly wage.  Participants must work at least 30 hours per week.

Many EDD offices also sponsor "Job Clubs" where potential employees get together to discuss experiences in looking for work, strategies for getting work, and such activities as mock interviews.
