Psalms Lessons

Psalms 14  "Who is the fool?" (© Jeff McNair)

Begin by asking about the "sit, stand, walk" card and what they did in the previous week.

If we understand our situation we recognize our need for Jesus

Read Psalms 14 v1  The fool says in his heart there is no God

Ask the following questions of the group.  You are setting them up for the next verse.

Don't you get angry with foolish people?  Don't foolish people make you sad and upset when they say things like "there is no God."  Can anybody think of an example where someone said there was no God?  Allow time for responses.

Read v2 &3

The Bible says that

All have turned aside

There is no one who does good, not even one

So, guess what...The fool is you and me, not just those other people who bother us.

This will be a revelation and people will be quite surprised.  Some may even disagree with you.  Don't allow them to get upset.  Point to the fact that we are all sinners in need of a savior.  We all need Jesus to forgive us of our sins.  The difference between us and those who are fools is that we are forgiven of our sins because we have turned to Jesus.  They have just not turned to Jesus yet.  So the only difference is that we have been and continue to be forgiven of our sins, those who have not accepted Jesus have not been forgiven.  That is really the only difference.

Read Romans 3:9-18 which says, "There is no one righteous...not even one"

So it is not us and them, its just us...all of us

Read v7 of Psalms 14

Before Christ there was the hope that "Oh that salvation would come out of Zion.  There was the hope that salvation would come.

Paul echoes their wish, but he recognizes that Jesus has come to make the difference

Romans 7:24 "Who will rescue me?  Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ."

We understand how we are.  We are all sinners. We are all fools in many ways.

We understand how we need Jesus.

Read Romans 8:1  "There is no condemnation" for any of us if we accept Jesus.  We are all fools, we are all sinners in need of a savior.

The main difference between us and others is we understand how we are all sinners.

We understand how we all need Jesus.
